5 fun science facts for Birds.

Science fair! Come and see! These are facts from our scientific data base: Weird, funny and a bit crazy! They are hidden in Bird: El inglés volando.

1. Thanks to the Dutch, the Vikings ruled the sea.

Ok, slower. The Frisians (north of The Netherlands) were superb ship builders. They used sails to navigate, and it seems that the Vikings implemented them as well due to the contact with them. Thus, they were able to sail in open sea even as far as the coasts of North America.

2. Water does NOT always boil at 100 degrees.

It appears that it depends on atmospheric pressure. On the coast, at sea level, water DOES boil at 100 degrees, as for example in Acapulco (Mexico). But if we go up a mountain… Pressure gets lower. And water will boil at a lower temperature. For instance: In La Paz (Bolivia), at 3900 metres above sea level, it’s 90 degrees.

3. It would take a commercial airplane 16 days to reach the Moon.

No, thanks.

4. The hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards.

And not only that: It can spin while flying, and it can also fly upside down! All this thanks to the excellent oxygen supply of its 400 beats per minute!! And up to 1200 while flying!!!

5. The radius of Venus is only 319 kilometres shorter than the radius of the Earth.

Although they could be twin planets, the average temperature of Venus is 463 ºC!
